What The…?! {Books to Movies}
How often do you come across a news article, a tweet or a blog entry and say "What the heck?!" I do it all the time, and so I started “What The…?!” a new feature here at For Love and Books – basically just a catch-all for my Bookish Thoughts – be they current events or general topics.
Today’s Topic? Book to Movie Adaptations
It’s no secret that this is a hot topic this week, I think a big movie came out yesterday… (Ok; so sarcasm is my first language, if you haven’t figured that out!)
As a bibliophile, I have the same problem as many – when they take one of my favorite books and turn it into a movie I am overly critical. Sure, I love the Harry Potter movies, the Twilight movies too! And I’m looking forward to The Hunger Games (which I haven’t yet seen, shame on me!) But sometimes? I put too much thought into the movie, and how it does or doesn’t match up to the book. I’m also more likely to see the movie multiple times (I saw New Moon in the theater FIVE times… Yep, that makes me a nerd.)
And the best movie experience I’ve ever had? The opening night of the first Harry Potter movie, which I saw with my high school friend Alissa – the year after I graduated. But that’s tied with the midnight premiere of Breaking Dawn Part I, which I saw with my kid sister. I love the enthusiasm that the fan-girls (and otherwise) put into these opening nights of movies!
My biggest complaint about ANY book to movie is the silly “Movie” covers the books get. (Despite my use below, which I only did so I could share both the movie and the book…) I always try to buy the original artwork when possible…
Some of my favorite book to movie adaptations? (Aside from the already mentioned?)
P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern – Despite the insane differences in the book and the movie.
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen – Hands Down? My favorite book ever. The movie? Not my favorite adaptation, but I did love it.
The Stand by Stephen King – I know I am one of the few people who like the original movie, but what can I say? I’m a nerd.
The Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King – Who didn’t love this??
What about you? What’s your favorite book to movie adaptation? Least favorite? What would you like to see done in the future?
