What The… {Reading is a Hobby}

How often do you come across a news article, a tweet or a blog entry and say “What the heck?!” I do it all the time, and so I started “What The…?!”  a new feature here at For Love and Books – basically just a catch-all for my Bookish Thoughts – be they current events or general topics.

cartoon3Today’s Topic? Reading is a Hobby!

I have been a Bibliophile for as long as I can remember! The summer after 3rd grade, my good friend Katie and I would walk to the local library, check out a dozen books and take them home to read. They were mostly Baby-Sitters Club and Boxcar Children books that summer, but I was reading through that pile in a week. My books went to the pool, to the park, everywhere.

In high school, I fell in love with large purses. Why? So I could carry my camera (a Canon Rebel of the pre-digital era) and a book with me everywhere I went. I’d moved on to read Stephen King and Harlequin Romances – yes, I’ve always had eclectic and diverse tastes in reading!

Recently, I had a discussion with my husband. He was telling me that he thinks I need a hobby – I explained that I had one. Reading. And an argument ensued. (And thus, this post was inspired!)

hob·by/ˈhäbē/

Noun:

  1. An activity done regularly in one’s leisure time for pleasure.

Thanks to dictionary.com we have the definition – and my reading definitely fits into that! (As does my blog, and my walking to the library to retrieve said books!)

Whenever I have a conversation with someone and they find out how much I read? They usually say something like “Wow, you need a life!” Umm.. I have one, a great one. Thanks. I have a group of friends that I meet with regularly (we even have a book club!) and I love to get out and play golf, take my three year old to the park and the zoo. I go on play-dates. I am an amateur photographer. I hike in the mountains near my house. But I also love to read – rather than watching countless hours of television, or putting together puzzles? I read. Then? To share my enthusiasm? I blog about it.

So yes, dear friend, Reading is a hobby! And it’s one that gives me endless satisfaction! I love to read at the gym, or listen to audio books on a long drive or while cleaning the house. It’s a hobby that helps to pass the time even when I’m doing things I don’t particularly enjoy doing.

What are some of your favorite memories of reading? How do you incorporate books into your daily life?
