What the…?! {Genre Specific Blogs}

How often do you come across a news article, a tweet or a blog entry and say “What the heck?!” I do it all the time, and so I started “What The…?!”  a new feature here at For Love and Books – basically just a catch-all for my Bookish Thoughts – be they current events or general topics.

Today’s Topic? Why my blog is not genre specific.

When I first started my blog, I was reading mostly Romance. I devoured the sappy sweet love stories, and I had every intention of sharing my hidden love for sappy, sexy reads online since I hid my obsession in ‘real life’.

It didn’t take long, (Just 4 short days – when I learned what NetGalley was!) to change my viewpoint on that. Today, I would say that my blog leans towards YA, but I review a fair amount of Romance, Adult Paranormal, Thriller and the occasional memoir. Which got me thinking, would I rather have a genre specific blog?

After much thought, my answer is no.

Sure, if I had a blog that stuck to one genre it might be easier to gain followers. I might get more ARCs and review copies. It’d be much easier on my SEO. And about a zillion smaller reasons why it would be wise to have a blog that focused on one specific genre.

But for me, my blog isn’t about the numbers. (Yes, I admit – they are nice to watch climb!) It’s not about snagging free books, or swag from authors. It’s about my passion for reading. It’s about sharing a great book I found with the world (or the five people who may or may not actually read my blog that day!) It’s a creative outlet a

nd a hobby that I take great pride in.

The more I thought about this? The more I realized a lot of my favorite blogs reach a wide variety of book genres as well, and only a few of my regular visits focus on one specific area. (I get bored too easily with the same stuff, day after day after day! Both in reading, and in writing.)

So my answer, in short? No, I don’t think I need to be genre specific.

So what about you? Is your blog

genre specific? Why or why not?
