Outlander Read-a-Long Week 4

This week is chapters 22 through 28!!

1. How do you feel about Claire disobeying Jamie and the resulting punishment he brings forth on her for this? Do you feel that Jamie’s punishment was justified by the fact that everyone was put in danger by Claire’s actions? Finally, did Jamie’s vow with Claire’s dagger do anything to sway your thoughts or change your mind on how you initially feel/felt about his punishment?

The modern-day me was torn. I was angry with Claire, but in this day in age? Beating someone is NEVER acceptable. So I fought with myself on this, for a long time. But in the end? Claire paid ZERO consideration to her actions, and Jamie was only acting in a manner that was expected of him at the time. Claire’s actions were frivolous and could have ruined things for a LOT of people, so after some thought? Yes, my mind changed and I understood why Jamie did what he did.

2. Just for fun, what was your reaction to the suspicious black spot Claire spotted on the floor near the area where Jamie was sleeping? Did you have any theories to what it might have been before it was revealed to be a _____?

The Bed-Bug?? (That’s what I’m going with…) To be honest, I got all itchy – as I do anytime Bed-Bugs are mentioned. Although I was also shocked that’s what it was… because aren’t bed-bugs tiny? And if I’m thinking of the right incident, then wouldn’t it be too big to be a bug? (Or am I confused on the whole Bed-Bug thing? Thankfully **KNOCK ON WOOD** I’ve never had to deal with them…

3. With regard to the ‘changeling’ baby Claire and Geilie spotted in the wild – if it were you back then and you happened upon a changeling baby in the wild in a circumstance such as this, do you think you’d have reacted most like Claire or Geilie? Explain.

This was just one more of those situations where I just wanted to grab Claire and shake her!! I get her wanting to help, she had knowledge of “modern” medicine (well, more modern than her current time!) and she knew she could help. BUT… like everything else, you NEED to step back and take stock of where you are. Modern Medicine is witchcraft in those days, it doesn’t take a genius to figure that out!! And so, as hard as it may be, I think she needed to sit back and observe. I would like to think I would react like Geilie, but I know I would want to act as Claire did.

4. Share your thoughts on Geilie Duncan. Is there anything that surprised you about her story or were you suspicious of her from the beginning?

I was completely broadsided by her! I knew something was up with her, but never in a million years did I think that her storyline would go where it did. (I’m thrilled that it did – but I was shocked. )

5. Your thoughts on Jamie’s LAST REASON for wanting to marry Claire – the one he had been so secretive about. GO!

Let me start by saying – after reading AND listening?? This scene NEEDS to be heard on Audiobook!! (Or better yet, go find a Scotsman to read it for you! I think that’s what I’ll do if I win the lottery – hire my own personal Scotsman to stand in my living room – in a kilt – and read the entire Outlander series to me!)

Really? I wasn’t surprised, but I was thrilled!! I grinned and blushed and immediately texted my friend (who introduced me to Outlander) to gush and gush. This is where my love for Jamie Fraser was cemented…

I’m with you. I thought bed bugs were small. Ewww.

Diana Gabaldon did a fantastic job with Geilie. I loved that I didn’t see the twist with her coming. Bravo!

Have you listed to this on audio? Does it have a cast of characters? I want to go out and get it! I agree, that it would probably completely enhance the reading experience. The Gellie thing shocked me as well! DG likes to do that to us, doesn’t she?

Are you listening to this one on audio? I wish I could! I bet it’s a LONG audiobook!

I thought bedbugs were tiny, too … though, when you Wikipedia them they look HUGE in pictures. Either way, I’d be creeped out!

I like your answer about the changeling — Claire really needs to stop acting on instinct for certain things and stop and assess. It’s like the waterhorse incident all over again! And that also came back to bite her in the butt!

When I read this for the first time, I didn’t expect Geilie to be from the future, either … I just thought she was a witch!

I understood too. I just think her actions were selfish and I can’t see what would have made her grow up and stop acting like her actions didn’t affect others.

YES!! She does need to take a chill pill and look around before these dramatic scenes!!! If she just used her brain instead of jumping into these situations she would avoid getting herself and others into trouble!!

My love for Jamie was cemented at this moment as well. This whole time I have liked him and he has been this character in a book but after this moment I was like wow…definitely one of my top male leads EVER. Also?? I NEED TO LISTEN TO THIS ON AUDIOBOOK OH MY GOD WHY HAVEN’T I BEEN LISTENING TO THIS ON AUDIOBOOK?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Finally, “I think that’s what I’ll do if I win the lottery – hire my own personal Scotsman to stand in my living room – in a kilt – and read the entire Outlander series to me!” Ummm I’ll go halfsies with ya on this one…?

now i really want to go get the audio book , but i bet it’s hella long. also, i think you’re right, claire didn’t see what she did as being wrong, she was just more or less humoring Jamie when she said she wouldn’t do it again, but that punishment really made her see how stupid her actions were.

Ooh, audio book you say? Maybe I’ll get a copy just to hear this. I never thought to listen to it on audio and hear Scottish accents!

Hahaha, that is surely one of the best uses of lottery money I have ever heard! I think I’m too AWKWARD to listen to this on audio. I can barely listen to kissing scenes.

I’m so with you on Claire needing to step back and think about her situation and the time. If she did this more often she wouldn’t be beaten by her husband or tried as a witch!

Can someone help me figure out where Claire comes up with the notion that Jamie’s uncle (i.e. Dougal) fathers a child with Laoghaire after overhearing Colum and Dougal fighting in Colum’s library? (chapter 24)
