MY THOUGHTS:
I read Rainshadow Road by Lisa Kleypas a month or so ago, and was excited when I finally got my hands on a copy of the next book in the series, Dream Lake! I absolutely loved her writing style, the magical realism was just fantastic. I was fairly sure I’d enjoy this next installment, but I was in no way prepared for how blown away I was.

Book #3 in the series is the story of Alex Nolan, the baby of the family, who drowns his troubles in alcohol, much like his parents had. And I have to admit, I was nervous for this, as I have had some personal experience with alcoholism in my life. But I’m so very glad I didn’t let that hinder me, because this book is so well written, it shows the honest and dark side of alcoholism – but it also does a wonderful job of showing that there is hope.

Of course, a Romance would not be complete without the female love interest – and in this case we have Zoë! She has her own demons in her past, but is one of the most kind and optimistic people I’ve ever encountered. (And it’s not in an annoying fashion either, her character is very genuine!) Zoë is also taking care of her Grandmother, Upsie, who has a unique form of dementia – and that story, while a bit overwhelming at first is incredibly touching in the end.

But for me, the romance wasn’t even the best part of this book! See, there’s a ghost! And he doesn’t know who he is, or why he’s spent the longest time “trapped” in the house on Rainshadow Road – but somehow, he connects with Alex. The story of the ghost is pretty fantastic, and it really helped to draw me into this book.

For me, Dream Lake was a quick and wonderful read. I was lost in the pages, not wanting the story to end. I found myself laughing out loud through much of this book, swooning a bit (and blushing!) at the romantic scenes and at one point, wrapped up in a puddle of tears. But I absolutely loved this book, and if you are even remotely a fan of Romance or Magical Realism? This book is the book for you!
