After her father loses the family fortune in an insider-trading scheme, single mom Parker Welles is faced with some hard decisions. First order of business: go to Gideon’s Cove, Maine, to sell the only thing she now owns—a decrepit house in need of some serious flipping. When her father’s wingman, James Cahill, asks to go with her, she’s not thrilled — …even if he is fairly gorgeous and knows his way around a toolbox.
Having to fend for herself financially for the first time in her life, Parker signs on as a florist’s assistant and starts to find out who she really is. Maybe James isn’t the glib lawyer she always thought he was. And maybe the house isn’t the only thing that needs a little TLC
Everytime I read one of Kristan Higgins’ books I find myself wondering why I waited so long in between her books. I love her writing, it’s so easy to just escape into the pages and put myself in her characters shoes. Somebody to Love is no exception.
A few characters are actually from previous books (although I sadly have not read either of them! Parker is from The Next Best Thing and Maggie and Malone (who I absolutely adored!) are from Catch of the Day.
And now that we’re talking about characters? At the start of the book, I have to admit I was disappointed with Parker. She seemed a bit too perfect, and I know Higgins doesn’t typically do the perfect thing, so I shouldn’t have even thought about it. But come on! She’s gorgeous, she’s loaded, a successful author and a single mom who is best friends with her sons dad and step-mom. Really? REALLY?? But oh, Parker is amazing, after her world crashes? I really connected with her and found myself cheering for her happiness.
I loved James (although I much prefer to call him Thing One, as Parker did!) I loved that he was the one chasing after the girl – that’s something that’s oh so rare and I just love it! I loved his connection with the small town in Maine that was our setting. I loved how hot he was.
And of course, the surrounding characters were amazing, they are well flushed out and feel real and you just can’t help but love them all and want to know more about them! (Which, as I mentioned above? You totally can!!)
One thing I absolutely love about this book (and all of Kristan’s books) is that the setting plays just as much a part in the books being so wonderful. Specifically in this book, the homes. From Parker’s mansion to the shack on the coast of Maine! (And the mouse in her pants – which was priceless, and a shirtless Thing One atop the roof *drool* )
If you’re into romance, especially contemporary? Then Kristan Higgins is a must read! She’s one of my top three favorites (Susan Mallery and Shannon Stacey are in that group – I love all three equally!) And if you like any of these three authors? You will love this book. So far, I think that Somebody to Love is one of my favorites from Kristan Higgins!
